I highly recommend the Bike the UK for MS JOGLE ride to others. Fantastic cycling, an experienced support <\/span><\/span>team, and the opportunity to meet and talk with numerous MS groups really puts a face on the terrible <\/span>disease that is MS make this a memorable two week adventure.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite memory from your trip?<\/span><\/p>\n

The seven or eight times I commented to Sara that this is <\/span><\/span>why we love cycling– beautiful vistas, great cycling weather, minimal traffic, and challenging hills with <\/span>great down-hill cruising.<\/span><\/p>\n

2018 – JOGLE – Bike the UK for MS<\/p>\n

2018 – 1 week Northern Tier – Bike the US for MS<\/p>\n

2016 – 10 days Southern Tier – Bike the US for MS<\/p>\n

2016 – PAC Coast – Bike the US for MS<\/p>\n

Do you have a connection to Multiple Sclerosis?<\/span><\/p>\n

Family friend has MS.<\/p>\n

Pre-trip<\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

How much training did you do for your trip?<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing special, but we lead fairly active lives. I would <\/span><\/span>strongly recommend that you don’t assume that you can cycle yourself into shape on this ride though <\/span>because of hills through-out the ride.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was your cycling experience before signing up?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Have done 3 multi-week tours ranging from 4.5 to <\/span><\/span>9 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where did you find the most success fundraising?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Not a big focus for us. I put a notice out on facebook, <\/span><\/span>but typically provide 95% of funding. Chevron retiree matching program provides matching funds up to <\/span>$3000\/year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Embarking on any big trip can be intimidating. What was your biggest pre-trip worry?<\/span><\/p>\n

Logistics of taking a <\/span><\/span>tandem overseas and having a problem after assembling it.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you travel to and from the trip?<\/span><\/p>\n

Flew from Houston to Glasgow, train to Inverness, John <\/span><\/span>O’Groat’s Bike Transport to John O’Groats. Found out later that it would have been considerably cheaper <\/span>to take the bus from Inverness to John O’Groats.<\/span><\/p>\n

Already had the Co-motion.<\/p>\n

Bike Computer for navigation was <\/span><\/span>great.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s one thing you brought that you wish you hadn\u2019t?

Did not use our backpack stove.<\/p>\n

3 pairs.<\/p>\n

3\" air mattress, tent, backpacking stove, mess kit, <\/span><\/span>light-weight sleeping bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

What did you put in your day cubby (in the rest stop van)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Depends on weather. rain gear, dry gear, <\/span><\/span>food.<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you prefer to ride alone or in a group?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Tandems struggle a bit to stay with singles, since they are <\/span><\/span>typically slower on up-hills and faster on descents.<\/span><\/p>\n

What would you keep in your bike jersey pockets?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Granola bars, phone.<\/p>\n

Did you use a bike computer? What was your normal pace?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, highly recommend it on JOGLE. 18-20 mph on speedy tandem!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How long did it take to learn to read the maps?<\/span><\/p>\n

That was stoker’s job.<\/p>\n

Riding on a flat terrain with a headwind, or climbing a mountain pass for miles. Which do you prefer?<\/span><\/p>\n

Riding down hill with a tailwind.<\/p>\n

Would you rather be riding through cold rain or extreme heat?<\/span><\/p>\n

Cold rain.<\/p>\n

What was the most physically challenging segment for you?<\/span><\/p>\n

Dartmoor day was a challenge because <\/span><\/span>strong rain on long hilly course.<\/span><\/p>\n

Were you an early riser, or rolling out of camp late?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Left with others when van was ready to roll.<\/p>\n

When you got to camp, the first thing you did was\u2026.

Relax<\/p>\n

How often would you do laundry?
<\/span><\/p>\n

Laundromat every 4-5 days with sink washing when needed.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the evening and you\u2019re out of your bike clothes, fed, and your tent is pitched. What are you doing to pass the time until you fell asleep?<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanging with others.<\/p>\n

On the rest day, did you prefer to go out and see what the town has to offer, or did you hang out, rest up, and relax?<\/span><\/p>\n

Plenty to see and do in Bath. We also were able to meet up with friends who were holidaying <\/span><\/span>in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n

Definitely. A highlight of the trip was definitely meeting up with MS groups on just about every other <\/span><\/span>day.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was your biggest takeaway from the trip?<\/span><\/p>\n
